The End of a Perfect Day

This scene is on the west coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, where the sunsets are often beautiful. This one, though, is striking and for me is memorable. The man appears to be a fisherman, but in reality he is a photographer setting his camera. My camera--not his-- was set with an aperture of f/8.0 and a speed of 1/1000 sec. The focal length of the lens was 28mm and the ISO setting was 100. This picture brings back a flood of memories.

The Petrified Tree

This petrified tree is within Yellowstone National Park. It is still standing (unlike most petrified trees which have long fallen). It has an interesting texture which reminds me of dried wood. All of the organic matter has been replaced by minerals--this is what is called petrification.

Taking this picture required considerable body contortions on my part, because the tree is completely surrounded by a fence of iron spear-like posts--each with an arrowhead-shaped tip facing upward. To take this picture, I had to get almost flat against the ground and aim the camera upward between two of the fence posts. The picture was taken at 1/100 sec at f/5.6 aperature.

Lights from a Time Gone By

In the time before electricity was easily available, lighting took many forms. This is one of them. The two lanterns form an interesting pattern when viewed against the back-lighted canvas of the ceiling.

Street Lights in a New Light

This street light is quite interesting when viewed at an angle that eliminates outside distractions.

Spanish Colonial Patio at Night

Some everyday scenes are more beautiful when viewed at night. The distractions of surrounding items are lost in the dark and the intrinsic beauty is easier to see. This patio, although interesting during the day, is quite striking as a night scene.

Mother and Daughter

In a world of predators, the mother follows the calf closely for protection. Though it is mid summer, this mother has not lost all of her thick winter coat. It almost certainly will come off before her new coat grows in the fall--making way for a new thick fur to last her through the coming winter.

The Fountains of Lagoon

Lagoon is an amusement park. We don't usually think of an amusement park as having artistic aspects, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think these fountains have a significant artistic appeal.

A Study in Black and White

We have a creek running through our back yard. There is sufficient water flow--even during the winter--to avoid freezing. This a typical view of our backyard after a snowfall.

Oahu Sunset

Hawaii is a great place for photographing sunsets. This is just one of them.

Saguaro National Park, Arizona

The plant to the left of the picture is a Saguaro cactus and is about 30 feet high. These plants live many years, and it is an amazing sight to see thousands of them on all sides.

The camera used was a Nikon E8700, and the picture was taken at f6.3 for 1/235 sec. The focal length setting of the lens was 35mm (in 35mm-equivalent).

Cloud Peak Primative Area

This photo was taken over 30 years ago. It was beautiful then and it is beautiful now.
